The Raising Children DVD was designed to improve parents’ skill and confidence using a private, audiovisual medium, recognising that a television monitor is the means through which most of us now receive information. By informing families of key child development information and a range of child-raising strategies, the program can make a major contribution toward the prevention of child abuse, neglect and the improvement of long-term outcomes for Australian children.

We all recognise how important it is for parents to be educated about the basic essentials for a child's healthy development. However we also know that not everyone learns the same way:

  1. some parents learn by word of mouth - talking with their parents or others over the phone or in person;
  2. some parents learn by reading books and magazines and
  3. some people learn best by visualising.

We all learn by trial and error and nothing can compare with hands-on experience, but when a life is at stake, preparation can prevent permanent problems.

Many parents will avoid human contact on the subject matter because they are embarrassed, insecure or have had bad experiences with authority figures in the past.  Many parents struggle in secret wishing they had access to reliable private, non-judgemental guidance.

There is nothing worse than parenting paralysis - sometimes an introduction of the key essentials is all a parent needs to respond to their child with confidence.

Raising Children Network Companion DVD

The program can be translated (dubbed) into the top alternative languages in Australia. By including some modelled behaviour, the program can also convey more information than the printed word. Our communication style is inclusive, practical and non-judgemental.

While the program will be based on the latest research and harm-prevention strategies, it ’ll be presented in a down-to-earth, entertaining way with a focus on practical and intriguing information. The “approachability” of the content can help parents recognise that there are strategies that can genuinely improve family life. Better still, they may be inspired to seek out more information and experiment with other tools that make raising children even easier and more rewarding.

The program gives the audience a glimpse into some of the marvels of child development, employing powerful, fast-paced production elements.

DISTRIBUTION. The Raising Children DVD is being distributed by the Australian Government in a new Parent Pack via hospitals and midwives (reaching all new parents in the country). We are also exploring other avenues including Australia Post, GPs, child and family health nurses, ante-natal classes, home visiting programs and parenting and youth centres. It can also be ordered online at www.raisingchildren.tv
